Abstract:
Challenges the view that modern political antisemitism had no repercussions in Italy. Based mainly on reactions to antisemitism in the Trieste Italian Jewish journal "Il Corriere Israelitico", discusses the reaction of the Catholic Church to Jewish emancipation. Mentions the Jesuit journal "La Civiltà Cattolica", which in the 1880s featured the topic of ritual murder. The Church encouraged anti-Jewish political activity. Pp. 54-59 discuss the appeal of Zionism to a number of Italian Jews, mainly as a reaction to antisemitism elsewhere in Europe.
