Abstract:
Trotsky was a firm internationalist and anti-Zionist, but he condemned antisemitism and was concerned about the sufferings of his fellow Jews. Early Trotskyist groups, although anti-Zionist, also condemned the anti-Jewish nature of the Arab nationalist movement and the Nazi connections of Haj Amin al-Husayni. But since 1967, the numerous Trotskyist factions have repudiated positions taken by Trotsky; they characterize Israel as an oppressor and call for its destruction. Discusses polemical works - particularly a pamphlet written by Abram Leon (who died in Auschwitz) between 1940-42 in which usury is depicted as a Jewish evil and the source of society's ills. This pamphlet is continually reprinted and is recommended reading for all Trotskyists. Examines the views of several factions active in the U.S., Great Britain, and continental Europe, and their leaders - Tony Cliff (born Ygael Gluckstein), Gerry Healy, Jack Barnes, Ernest Mandel, Ted Grant - and antisemitic aspects of their anti-Zionism. Notes the sharp drop in Jewish membership in the Trotskyist movement since 1967, and the virulent anti-Zionism of some of its Jewish members.
Note:
Trotskyist attitudes towards the Jews, particularly after 1967.
