Abstract:
The participants - Sol Encel, Rodney Gouttman, Philip Mendes, Bill Rubinstein, and Bernie Taft - contend that although antisemitism has not been a dominant force in the Australian Left, and at times the Left has shown antipathy toward it (e.g. the Communist Party's denouncement of fascism during the 1930s), expressions of antisemitism have existed both in the mainstream (e.g. the writings of prominent Labor politician Frank Anstey) and in the fringe (e.g. student Maoist groups). Many contend that the New Left view of Israel as an aggressor, and the equation of anti-Zionism with antisemitism, which developed in the 1960s-70s, has permeated Australian society, especially the university campuses.
