Kurzfassung:
Some Muslims engaged in dialogue with Christians, particularly with the Vatican or the World Council of Churches, hope to use that dialogue to obtain Christian censure of Israel. An invitation to dialogue with Islam forms part of the "Nostra Aetate" declaration; however, Muslims rejected the declaration as a product of Zionist influence. Islamic leaders do not differentiate between theology and politics and most Muslim theological bodies are highly politicized and preoccupied with anti-Zionism. Describes the Seminar at Tripoli, Libya, in February 1976 at which the declaration that Zionism is a racist movement contradicted Vatican policy and had to be disavowed. Other contacts took place with Muslims in Iran and Egypt. The WCC had more success with unofficial Muslim bodies, but in 1981-82 it held a meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka, co-sponsored by the antisemitic World Muslim Congress (known as Motamar) which engages in spreading Holocaust denial literature. Since 1982 there has been no direct dialogue with any Muslim institution.
