Abstract: Maimonides' Letter to Samuel Ibn Tibbon is preserved in one fragment in its Judeo-Arabic original version, only, but it also survives in sixteen Hebrew manuscripts and in an early printed edition. The analysis of the textual witnesses shows that four independent Hebrew translations of different sections of the Letter were produced. An additional version found in the editio princeps and related manuscripts is a combination of one of the earlier translations and one or more additional source(s), possibly a fifth Hebrew translation. Only this last version contains in the last section on the study of philosophical books a much debated reference to Ibn Rushd and to al-Farabi's Political Regime. In view of the hybrid character of the editio princeps it is necessary to study the Letter synoptically from all the witnesses. The analysis also shows that the so-called Letter probably consists of two separate pieces written at a distance of about ten days.

Abstract: Because most readers of Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed read it in translations, the exact understanding of these translations is very important for the history of the interpretation of the Guide. The aim of this article is to show that Al- Harizi's translations of the Judeo-Arabic word taʾwil have an important philosophical implication. His translations change a few critical passages in the Guide and make the radical (naturalist) interpretation of the Guide by the readers of this translation very improbable. By contrast, the translation by Samuel Ibn Tibbon makes this interpretation completely plausible (as does the Judeo-Arabic original). In my opinion the changes by Al-Harizi are part of his more traditional conservative interpretation of the Guide.

Abstract: Medieval Jewish readings of the Akedah, the Binding of Isaac, remain almost entirely oblivious to the antinomy between ethics and the revealed divine command that many modern interpretations find at the heart of the story. This study explores an exception, the teaching of the fourteenth-century rationalist, Eleazar Ashkenazi ben Nathan Ha-Bavli. In his Revealer of Secrets, Eleazar seeks a remedy for what he takes to be the theological and moral scandals that arise when the Akedah is read according to its plain sense. While Eleazar’s treatment of the Akedah builds in many ways on that of Maimonides, it also adds novel layers regarding this most difficult of biblical accounts. For this reason, the study begins with a substantial review of Maimonides’ intentionally elusive treatment of the Akedah and its reception among some representative later medieval interlocutors. Turning to its main focus, the article supplies a case study in medieval Jewish rationalism at its limits, in both matter and manner.

Abstract: Portraits of Abraham often bear the distinctive stamp of their creators, a fact attested in spiritual biographies of the patriarch in medieval Jewish literature. An example is Abraham as portrayed in the pages of a Torah commentary by the fourteenth-century Maimonidean Eleazar Ashkenazi ben Nathan ha-Bavli. In step with Maimonidean models, this Abraham ardently cultivates noesis as the principal religious activity. At the same time, he puts himself in grave danger in order to promote a revolutionary monotheistic teaching. While often taking his bearings from Maimonides, Eleazar can imbue Maimonidean ideas and interpretations with new resonances and turn them in novel directions. In his account of Abraham’s career as a monotheist missionary, Eleazar portrays Abraham in a manner without Maimonidean precedent when he imputes to the patriarch the use of mockery as a device to breach idolatrous ignorance. Eleazar emulates Abraham’s use of ridicule in his campaign on rationality’s behalf. Yet where Eleazar’s Abraham uses mockery against pagan irrationality, Eleazar deploys it to deride fruits of the midrashic hermeneutic and its foremost medieval spokesperson, Rashi. Put otherwise, Eleazar ridicules midrashim that threaten to turn the divine word into a propagator of the sort of unscientific myths Abraham so heroically opposed. In so doing, he positions himself in a line of enlighteners standing at the perennial crossroads between rational religion and popular faith.

Abstract: This paper analyzes two transformative conceptions of qedushah (holiness) in medieval Jewish thought, Moses Maimonides’s and Moses Nahmanides’s. Maimonides reduces qedushah to the Mosaic commandments which he reconceives as communal institutions to constrain bodily desires and promote intellectualist values and as training for perfected individuals to de-corporealize themselves in imitation of God. Nahmanides argues that Maimonides’s legal reduction of qedushah leads to the absurd conclusion that the perfectly scrupulous law-abiding scoundrel who exploits loopholes in the law is qadosh! He therefore reconceives qedushah as a complement to the Mosaic commandments intended to counter the problem of the scoundrel. Thus qedushah is re-born as a corrective to abuse of the Law. Nahmanides then proposes two ways to achieve this goal: i) by rabbinic enactment of more laws to fill in (loop) holes in the Law and ii) by cultivating a virtue-oriented, non-legal conception of holiness as a character-trait that leads agents to act properly and spontaneously without legislation. For Maimonides the ultimate state of qedushah is the dis-embodied state of the intellect, for Nahmanides it is a state in which the whole person, body and soul, clings to the deity.

Abstract: Jewish thought can be seen as a collection of encounters between Jewish texts, thought, rituals, and the external culture. The clearest and most well-known example of such an "encounter" is Jewish thought in the emphasis on that of Maimonides and his successors, largely shaped by their encounters with Greek philosophy. Middle Ages, with an which was Similarly, many modern thinkers, such as Herman Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig, and even Rabbi Kook and Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, developed and shaped their philosophy following encounters with contemporary European philosophy - Neo-Kantian philosophy and German idealism. In this article, I will adopt this perspective, viewing Jewish thought as "sequence of encounters" and pointing out a new and fascinating encounter that is currently taking place: the encounter between Jewish thought and law and analytical philosophy. It will begin with a brief presentation and overview of analytical philosophy and will then turn to namine and discuss the implications of the encounter that has taken place in recent decades between analytical philosophy and modern Jewish thought for the worlds of research and philosophy.

Abstract: This article examines two letters written by Immanuel of Rome, the fourteenth-century poet and thinker from Italy. Using new manuscript evidence, as well as a new comparative lens, the essay challenges traditional ideas about Immanuel's timeline and intellectual affiliations. Considering a discovery of an older version, a reexamination of a freestanding letter believed to have been part of the Maimonidean debate between Zerahiah of Barcelona and Hillel of Verona shows that Immanuel was not involved in this dispute over the proper application of philosophy and science to biblical exegesis. Having no known addressee, Immanuel's invective letter addresses a scholar's reliance on foreign wisdom, but the most interesting part of the letter is the concluding invective couplet. While scholars had identified the freestanding letter as an indication of Immanuel's involvement in the Maimonidean controversy, this article contends that such involvement is far more evident in a rhetorical letter embedded in Mahberot Immanuel, Immanuel's poetic anthology. The embedded fictional letter, addressed to Joab, challenges a poet, teacher, and ersatz scholar, as Immanuel derides his inability to appreciate allegorical readings of the Bible and his lack of a philosophical education. Using allusions to his own allegorical readings of biblical verse, Immanuel lampoons Joab as an Ashkenazic Jew, in his traditionalist exegetical sensibilities as well as in his inability to compose mellifluous verse. The article concludes that Immanuel was deeply attuned to the nuances of late medieval debates over the relationship between philosophy and Torah.

Abstract: R. Samuel Ibn Tibbon translated the title of the book, Dalalat al-ḥa’irin, as Moreh Nebhukhim, Guide of the Perplexed, thus creating a connection between the title of the book and the verse in Exodus 14:3: 'they are perplexed in the land' (nebhukim hem ba-areṣ). We argue that when Maimonides assigned the Arabic title to his work, he too thought of this connection to the verse. According to this, Moreh Nebhukhim serves not only as a guide to those who are perplexed by the contradictions between the Torah and philosophy, but also as a defense against those religions that make claims about the confusion of the Jewish religion.

Abstract: The adoption and adaptation of Maimonidean ideas by a staggering array of Jewish thinkers, especially those who opposed his philosophical and legal positions, testifies to Maimonides’s success in reframing Jewish thought. This essay focuses on an exchange between Daniel ben Saadia ha-Bavli (fl. early thirteenth century) and Abraham Maimonides (1186–1237), which occurred in the shadow of twelfth-century institutional opposition to Maimonides (1138–1204), a period in which Maimonides’s reputation began to take shape. Despite the staunch opposition of Daniel’s teacher, Samuel ben ʿElī Ibn al-Dastūr (d. 1194/1197), to Maimonides, as well as Daniel’s own disagreements with Maimonidean theology, Daniel assimilated many Maimonidean legal doctrines, integrating them into his jurisprudential thought. Their exchange shows that both Abraham and Daniel, to different degrees, evaluated Maimonides’s writings with a certain degree of distance, absent much of the rancor of earlier and later Maimonidean controversies. Daniel’s critical engagement with Maimonides underscores that even those educated in the heart of the opposition to the Great Eagle derived much from his writings. Much like those who rejected Maimonidean philosophy, later talmudists who spurned aspects of Maimonides’s halakhah benefited profoundly from his efforts at categorization, organization, and systematization.

Abstract: There is a strong consensus that Maimonidean ethics were heavily influenced by Aristotle’s doctrine of the middle way. And yet, sharp differences have emerged over the role played by Aristotelianism in the views of the Cordoba-born talmudist and philosopher. This study argues that while Maimonides embraced the Aristotelian paradigm in his youth, he eventually came to abandon it entirely and moved to adopt a distinctly rabbinic approach to ethics. This evolution went largely unnoticed due to the failure of commentators to detect a diachrony in the development Maimonides’s ethical writings. The evolution in his thinking was necessitated by a rereading of the rabbinic sources and by the ineluctable logic of the imitatio dei imperative. Of great importance to the history of religious thought and to the fundamental tenets of Judaism, I note that Maimonides crafted, on this foundation, an ethical commandment that was novel and original, and which functioned, substantively, as a kind of meta-commandment.

Abstract: This essay examines the influence of Moses Maimonides’s (1138–1204) theory of law and the supererogatory ideal on the pietist vision championed by his son, Abraham (1186–1237). It focuses on the place of pietism within the framework of the overarching aims of the law and on Abraham’s construction of a pietist discipline modeled on his father’s legal thinking. It identifies several ways in which Abraham hewed closely to his father’s legal and ethical rubric even as he created an innovative system of pietism in the process. Here, as elsewhere, Abraham’s thought ought to be understood, in part, as a conscious development of Maimonides’s theoretical foundation into a practical vision for pietism.

Abstract: One of the well-known conundrums of the Guide of the Perplexed, found in its last chapter, pertains to Maimonides's contradictory presentation of the hierarchy of human virtues and perfections. This article draws attention to a parallel between the paradox posed by the closing paragraphs of the Guide and the contradiction found in the concluding paragraphs of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, a parallel that has never been noted by students of Maimonides. The intention here is not to make a categorical statement about Maimonides's position on the core issues of the relationship between the intellect and the moral virtues. Rather, it is to shed new light on the unexpected structure of the last chapter, and thus also provide a significant addition to the important debate about Maimonides's position on these issues.

Abstract: The modalities – necessity, possibility, and impossibility – are not topics like the existence of God, creation versus eternity, prophecy, divine attributes, or providence whose “secrets” Maimonides investigates in the Guide. They belong instead to the philosophical and logical framework within which these topics are explored. But they are no less perplexing. The modal terms often differ in meaning in different contexts, depending on whether the subject is physics or metaphysics, and for the falasifa and the mutakallimun. Therefore, in order to address any of the central controversies of the Guide, we must first sort out these modal notions, distinguishing the different conceptions in different contexts.

Abstract: One of the most provocative chapters in Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed is part 3, chapter 13. In this chapter, Maimonides criticizes anthropocentrism and teleology. He argues, inter alia, that it is pointless to seek the telos of the universe; that the universe was not created for the sake of humans; and that all beings were intended for their own sakes, not for the sake of something else. These views were rejected by many later philosophers, like Thomas Aquinas, Levi Gersonides, Moses Narboni, Hasdai Crescas, Isaac Arama, Saul Morteira, and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Narboni wrote: “I am very perplexed by the Master! … [His words] contradict all the sciences. For the goal of all the sciences is to know the final end … This is no less than the abolition of the nature of the intellect!” Crescas wrote: “[It cannot be] what appears from the literal sense of the Master’s words. Heaven forfend that it should be attributed to God what would be a grave defect in any intelligent being,” namely, acting with no purpose! Arguably “[the most] systematic effort to rebut Maimonides’ discussion [in Guide 3.13]” was that of Saul Levi Morteira, Spinoza’s teacher. Spinoza, however, was not convinced by him. Indeed, he was the first major philosopher to embrace wholeheartedly Maimonides’ criticisms of anthropocentrism and teleology. Maimonides’ discussion in Guide 3.13, formatively influenced Spinoza’s celebrated assault on final causality in his appendix to part 1 of Ethics.

Abstract: One of the distinctive features of Maimonides’ approach to the problem of evil is that he treats the problem not only from a metaphysical viewpoint, but from a psychological one as well. He blends philosophical, biblical, talmudic, and midrashic insight with psychological acumen, just as he does in his writings and communications to beleaguered communities and individuals. In the area of theodicy, then, he tackles two sorts of issue: (1) How God could allow any evil; how, in particular, God could allow the righteous to suffer and the wicked to prosper and (2) How human beings should experience and cope with suffering and death, and behave in its presence. For example, they need to ask themselves whether their personal situations affect how they assess the amount of evil in the world, whether what they regard as evils are truly evils or instead just contrary to their interests, whether they are blaming God for evils they caused out of their own free will, and what they can do to better their condition. Maimonides sometimes commutes between the psychological and philosophical dimensions of the problem.

Abstract: This approach to Divine Law that Maimonides diagnoses as rooted in sickness of the soul has its source in a deep religious impulse and sensibility. Such an outlook assumes that providing humanly useful reasons for the commandments empties them of their religious meaning. Divine Law, if it has its source in a God who transcends humanity, must be inscrutable. Even more so, the religious meaning of fulfilling God’s commandments ought to be manifested in the surrender of the human will to the divine will. Worship is constituted as obedience, and such an obedience in principle cannot be in the service of human aims. It is not only the case that humans are incapable of approaching God’s mind and understanding His commands, but rather, the ascription of reasons to God’s commandments runs against their very purpose. The only reason for obeying a commandment is that God commanded it, and any attempt to harness such commandments to foster human aims would taint and undermine their purity as religiously motivated acts. This view is considered by Maimonides as that of sick souls since it constitutes an arbitrary God who commands with no reason, and it posits a human worshiper engaged in meaningless obedience. Maimonides provides a radical and thoroughly anthropocentric alternative to the meaning and end of Divine Law. Divine Law has a reason, it aims at human flourishing and it guides humans to achieve their ultimate perfection.

Abstract: This article investigates Maimonides’s ethos of disclosing “secrets” and explores its Islamic origins, focusing on sources neglected by earlier scholarship concerning the Guide of the Perplexed. I turn from the prevalent method by which the Guide has been studied for decades, namely, as a work at the core of which lie strategies and an ethos of concealment. In lieu of the conventional method, I go in a very different direction by inquiring into the modes that Maimonides used in fashioning his Guide as a work that involves a self-proclaimed exceptional act of revelation of secrets and a breach of the boundaries of concealment. The resulting textual investigation demonstrates that clusters of motifs presented in these sources, as well as structures of arguments, were retained in their cultural migration. This exploration allows me to illuminate new aspects of the question of the genre of Maimonides’ Guide, its sources, and its author’s intertextual art of writing.

Abstract: This article sheds new light on Maimonides’ theory of the generality of law as expounded in his philosophical work Guide for the Perplexed (part 3, chapter 34) and his responsum to the people of Aleppo (Maimonides Responsa, ed. Y. Blau, revised 2nd edition, Jerusalem 1986, Siman 224). Scholars to date have treated Maimonides’ theory of the generality of law as derived from the philosophy of Plato and Aristotle, which is summed up in the first part of the article. I argue that in trying to understand this theory we must consider his polemic against Muhammad Al-Ghazali as a representative of Sufi Islam and its ‘doctrine of distinction’. According to this doctrine, there is no generality of law and each case must be judged on its own merits. The Sufis cited this doctrine in connection with sama (group singing), which was an integral part of the Sufi mystical experience. Sama was a widespread practice discussed in Sufi literature from its earliest days. Al-Ghazali devotes two chapters of his epic work Ihya ulum al-din (‘The Revival of Religious Science’) to the laws governing sama. I maintain that Maimonides was familiar with Al-Ghazali’s treatise and argued against his doctrine of distinction, which would explain why he brings up music when discussing the generality of law. Three additional factors support my claim: (a) Muslim religious scholars who lived in Maimonides’ day were also critical of Al-Ghazali’s doctrine, and it follows that Maimonides was part of this discourse; (b) Maimonides employs many Sufi terms in his writing, especially on matters related to singing; and (c) other issues that Maimonides addresses in his responsa, such as bans on singing, conventions on the singing of women and the use of various musical instruments, also appear in Al-Ghazali’s treatise. Furthermore, the five categories of song (Ahkam al-khamsa) discussed by Al-Ghazali crop up in Maimonides’ commentary on the Mishnah (Avot 1, 16). The subject of the generality of law is only one in a long list of parallel themes which, according to scholars cited in the article, connect the teachings of Maimonides to the theological-philosophical doctrines of Muhammad Al-Ghazali.

Abstract: During the twelfth century, Jewish thinkers began using an esoterictechnique in their writing, concealing their views under a textual cover. Infact, they created two meanings for the text: one overt and one covert. Thearticle argues that they did so unreflectively at first, without signs ofawareness. A consciousness of esoteric writing took shape during the twelfthcentury and the article shows how, with this growing awareness,concealment techniques became richer.Should a theological or philosophical text written within a religiouscontext necessarily be consistent? Should it be free of contradictions?Certainly not, and especially when it deals with issues the thinker considersabstract, loaded, touching on the most delicate questions of true faith andtranscending easily understandable matters. The contradictions of authorswho have produced outstanding works may be assumed to be deliberaterather than due to negligence since, from these writers’ perspective, they aredirectly concerned with immortality or, God forbid, with annihilation anddisappearance. These are issues that determine whether humans will reachcommunion with God or be rejected and estranged. Tensions andsensitivities prevalent in the religious world only further ambiguous writing.In this article, I examine strains and inconsistencies deliberately usedby considering several techniques of inconsistencies and intentionalcontradictions in twelfth-century Jewish thought, particularly in thewritings of Judah Halevi and Maimonides. I intend to show how esotericwriting moved from the reality of a work based on contradictions to one thatexplicitly details its own contradictory nature. In other words, I want to showhow esoteric writing shifted from practice to consciousness. I will firstremark briefly on the characteristics of esoteric writing in the Middle Ages.

Abstract: This paper is devoted to analyzing Shem Tov ben Joseph Ibn Shem Tov’sunderstanding of the esoteric character of Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed,as well as to the esoteric techniques Shem Tov himself employed in hiscommentary on the book. His commentary, written shortly prior to theSpanish expulsion, is characterized by a thorough rationalistic reading ofMaimonides’ views on different key theological and philosophical issues. Hisbasic stance is to identify Maimonides’ views with those of earlierAristotelian philosophers, especially Alfarabi and Avicenna. In his magnumopus, Maimonides employed a host of esoteric techniques with the aim ofrevealing the truth only to the few true intellectuals, and we will describehow Shem Tov understood these techniques. As we will see, Shem Tov was acareful reader of the Guide and he paid special attention to the termsMaimonides employed. Moreover, just as Maimonides employed an esotericstyle when discussing the secrets of the Torah, so too does the commentatorwhen discussing the secrets of the. The adoption of an esoteric style ofwriting is, in my view, what most defines the uniqueness of thiscommentator and it is, ironically, this very aspect that has not receivedadequate scholarly attention.

Abstract: Deals with reactions to the biblical commandment prohibiting Jews from returning to live in Egypt, as discussed in the Talmud, in Maimonides' comments on this prohibition and on his own transgression of it, on the views of the 14th-century Maimonidean Jewish scholar Estori ha-Parhi regarding Maimonides' transgression, and on the views of 16th-century Christian Hebraists who greatly admired Maimonides but were perplexed about his having lived most of his life in Egypt, in the face of the biblical law.
