Abstract:
An analysis of one major aspect of the historical and interpretative writings by Gershom Scholem – the historian of religion in general and of Jewish mysticism in particular. The central issue analyzed and interpreted is the juxtaposition of the mystic union on the one hand and symbolism on the other. Symbolism presupposes an awareness of the chasm between man and God. Hence, the article deals with Hegel’s interpretation of mysticism, leading to the conclusion that mysticism is not essentially a pantheistic view.
