Abstract:
From 1897 on, the British embassy in Paris, Queen Victoria and her court, the prime minister, and, with some reservations, the press (led by "The Times") became impassioned sympathizers with Alfred Dreyfus and bitter critics of his persecutors. Traces the development of their reaction to the Affair and the main motifs of the pro-Dreyfus discourse in Britain. Defense of Dreyfus was accompanied by criticism of the French judicial system and the entire French civilization as corrupt; contrast between the moral virtues of the Dreyfusard "minority" and the depraved anti-Dreyfusard "majority"; enmity of anti-Dreyfusards against Britain; and a stress on the role of Catholicism as a pillar of anti-Dreyfusard fanaticism. The Dreyfusard position was congenial to the British, because it demonstrated the superiority of British or Anglo-Saxon political principles over the "continental." A few dissenting voices stemmed from Catholics and Irishmen on the one hand, and from antisemitic socialists on the other.
