Abstract:
A revised version of a paper delivered at the colloquium "L'Affaire Dreyfus et la construction de l'antisémitisme politique en Europe", Paris, May 1993. It has become a commonplace in the literature on Herzl that the Dreyfus case made him a Zionist, usually explained as a result of Herzl's indignation at the condemnation of an innocent person only because he was a Jew. However, a perusal of Herzl's writings shows that Herzl was already interested in the "Jewish question" before the Affair; besides, in the early stages of the Affair he had no doubts regarding Dreyfus's guilt. It was not the trial but the public reaction to it in France which was "the last straw" that turned Herzl into a Zionist.
