    Abstract: "Jews, Race, and the Politics of Difference explores how Russian Jewish writers and political activists such as Vladimir Jabotinsky turned to "race" as an operational concept in the late imperial politics of the Russian Empire. Building on the latest scholarship on racial thinking and Jewish identities, Marina Mogilner shows how Jewish anthropologists, ethnographers, writers, lawyers, and political activists in late imperial Russia sought to construct a Jewish identity based on racial categorization in addition to religious affiliation. By grounding nationality not in culture and territory but in blood and biology, race offered Jewish nationalists in Russia a scientifically sound and politically effective way to reaffirm their common identity. Jews, Race, and the Politics of Difference presents the works of Jabotinsky as a lens to understanding Jewish "self-racializing," and brings Jews and race together in a framework that is more multifaceted and controversial than that implied by the usual narratives of racial antisemitism"--

The concept of genocide has proved its worth, but that expansion has also compounded the tensions between a rigid legal concept and the manifold realities researchers have discovered.     Abstract: "Every nation has narratives or stories it tells itself about its history, but which typically contain factually false or misleading mythologies that often result in devastating consequences for itself and for others. In the case of Israel and its indispensable ally, the United States, the central mythology is "the Arabs never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity," as the Israeli diplomat Abba Eban famously said in a 1973 statement that has been widely quoted ever since. However, the historical truth is very nearly the converse: it is Israel and the U.S. that have repeatedly lost or deliberately dismissed many opportunities to reach fair compromise settlements of the Arab-Israeli and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts. The book reexamines the entire history of the conflict from its onset at the end of WWI through today. Part I begins with a reconsideration of Zionism and then examines the origins and early years of the Arab-Israeli state conflict. One chapter is devoted to the question of what accounts for the nearly unconditional U.S. support of Israel throughout the entire conflict. Part II focuses on war and peace in the Arab-Israeli state conflict from 1948 through today, arguing that all the major wars-in 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973--could and should have been avoided. This section also includes an examination of the Cold War and its impact on the Arab-Israeli conflict. Part III covers the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from 1917 through today, and examines the prospects for a two-state or other settlement of the conflict"--

    Abstract: Als Marina Weisband ihre Followerschaft bei Twitter fragte, was sie so am Judentum interessiere, wurde sie mit Fragen überschüttet. Angesichts der Fülle an Themen holte sie sich Unterstützung von Eliyah Havemann. Zusammen beschlossen sie, die Fragen zunächst in der Videoreihe #FragEinenJuden bei YouTube und dann - in erweiterter Form - in einem Buch zu beantworten. Entstanden ist eine so lebendige und anschauliche Annäherung an das Judentum, wie es keine trockene Einführung zu vermitteln vermag. Denn sie listen keine Fakten auf, sondern tauschen sich aus und sprechen jeweils aus ihrer eigenen Perspektive: Marina Weisband als gläubige, nicht religiöse Jüdin und Eliyah Havemann als modern-orthodoxer Jude. Nicht immer sind sie sich einig - und genau das spiegelt die Vielfalt des Judentums. Es geht darum, wer Juden eigentlich sind, um die Religion allgemein, um religiöse Strömungen, um die jüdische Kultur und das Zusammenleben und nicht zuletzt um Antisemitismus

    Abstract: When the state of Israel was established in 1948, not all Palestinians became refugees: some stayed behind and were soon granted citizenship. Those who remained, however, were relegated to second-class status in this new country, controlled by a military regime that restricted their movement and political expression. For two decades, Palestinian citizens of Israel were cut off from friends and relatives on the other side of the Green Line, as well as from the broader Arab world. Yet they were not passive in the face of this profound isolation. Palestinian intellectuals, party organizers, and cultural producers in Israel turned to the written word. Through writers like Mahmoud Darwish and Samih al-Qasim, poetry, journalism, fiction, and nonfiction became sites of resistance and connection alike. With this book, Maha Nassar examines their well-known poetry and uncovers prose works that have, until now, been largely overlooked. The writings of Palestinians in Israel played a key role in fostering a shared national consciousness and would become a central means of alerting Arabs in the region to the conditions and to the defiance of these isolated Palestinians. Brothers Apart is the first book to reveal how Palestinian intellectuals forged transnational connections through written texts and engaged with contemporaneous decolonization movements throughout the Arab world, challenging both Israeli policies and their own cultural isolation. Maha Nassar reexamines these intellectuals as the subjects, not objects, of their own history, and brings to life their perspectives on a fraught political environment. Her readings not only deprovincialize the Palestinians of Israel, but write them back into Palestinian, Arab, and global history.--

So entstanden zwei faszinierende Erzählungen des Nahostkonflikts, die dieses Buch Seite für Seite nebeneinanderstellt. Beim Lesen erschließt sich dadurch nicht nur der Verlauf der Ereignisse - von der Balfour-Deklaration (1917) bis zum Ende des 20.     Abstract: " In 1862, in the only instance of a Jewish expulsion in America, General Ulysses S. Grant banished Jewish citizens from the region under his military command. Although the order was quickly revoked by President Lincoln, it represented growing anti-Semitism in America. Convinced that assimilation was their best defense, Jews sought to Americanize by shedding distinctive dress, occupations, and religious rituals. American Jews recognized the benefit and urgency of bridging the divide between Reform and Orthodox Judaism to create a stronger alliance to face the challenges ahead. With Grant's 1868 presidential campaign, they also realized they could no longer remain aloof from partisan politics. As they became a growing influence in American politics, both political parties courted the new Jewish vote. Once in office, Grant took notice of the persecution of Jews in Romania and Russia, and he appointed more Jews to office than any president before him. Indeed, Simon Wolf, a Washington lawyer who became one of Grant's closest advisers, was part of a new generation of Jewish leaders to emerge in the post-Civil War era--thoroughly Americanized, politically mature, and committed to the modernized Judaism of the Reform movement"--

    Abstract: "For many years before and after the establishment of the state of Israel, the belief that Israel is a Western state remained unchallenged. This belief was founded on the predominantly western composition of the pre-statehood Jewish community known as the Yishuv. The relatively homogenous membership of Israeli/Jewish society as it then existed was soon altered with the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Jewish immigrants from Middle Eastern countries during the early years of statehood. Seeking to retain the western character of the Jewish state, the Israeli government initiated a massive acculturation project aimed at westernizing the newcomers. More recently scholars and intellectuals began to question the validity and logic of that campaign. With the emergence of new forms of identity, or identities, two central questions emerged; to what extent can we accept the ways in which people define themselves? And on a more fundamental level; what weight should we give to the ways in which people define themselves? This book suggests ways of tackling these questions and provides varying perspectives on identity, put forward by scholars interested in the changing nature of Israeli identity. Their observations and conclusions are not exclusive, but inclusive, suggesting that there cannot be one single Israeli identity, but several. Tackling the issue of identity, this multidisciplinary approach is an important contribution to existing literature and will be invaluable for scholars and students interested in Cultural Studies, Israel, and the wider Middle East"--

    Abstract: D'Ignaz Goldziher, qui put étudier à la grande université Al-Azhar du Caire, à Hermann Vambéry qui, déguisé en derviche, gagna Samarkande à pied, à la recherche des origines ouzbèkes supposées de la langue hongroise, les savants juifs des XIXe et XXe siècles eurent un rapport privilégié avec l'Orient, entendu comme l'espace dans lequel s'est déployée la culture arabo-musulmane, mais qui désigne aussi l'ensemble des pays extérieurs à la loi chrétienne, comme en attestent les travaux des indianistes Sylvain Lévi ou Theodor Benfey. « Passeurs d'Orients », donc, ils participent activement d'un mouvement qui fonde une science nouvelle, originellement philologique, mais aussi science des religions, que les clivages du second XXe siècle aura tôt fait de qualifier de "colonialiste", quand il s'est agi, surtout, d'en dégager la dimension singulière, au regard d'un Occident désorienté. À travers les plus grandes figures de l'orientalisme, le volume, issu en partie d'un colloque qui eut lieu au Musée d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaïsme de Paris en 2012, retrace à la fois l'histoire et les implications de cette relation particulière et en dénoue les malentendus idéologiques et politiques. Perrine Simon Nahum (1960) est historienne et chargée de recherches au CNRS. elle est également en charge d'une collection d'essais chez Grasset.     Abstract: Human rights offer a vision of international justice that today's idealistic millions hold dear. Yet the very concept on which the movement is based became familiar only a few decades ago when it profoundly reshaped our hopes for an improved humanity. Here, historian Samuel Moyn elevates that transformation to center stage and asks what it reveals about the ideal's troubled present and uncertain future. It was on the ruins of earlier political utopias, Moyn argues, that human rights achieved contemporary prominence. The morality of individual rights substituted for the soiled political dreams of revolutionary communism and nationalism as international law became an alternative to popular struggle and bloody violence. But as the ideal of human rights enters into rival political agendas, it requires more vigilance and scrutiny than when it became the watchword of our hopes.--From publisher description

    Abstract: "From the heady days of Nasser's Arab nationalism to the cold peace of the Mubarak era, the idea and reality of Israel has occupied a central position in Egyptian politics. Ewan Stein seeks to explain and historicise the state of 'no war, no peace' that followed the 1979 Camp David Accords, examining the way in which domestic factors interact with global and regional shifts to shape attitudes to Israel in the Arab world's most populous country. Incorporating the writings of prominent political thinkers, this book looks at how approaches to Israel have been elaborated through broader ideologies - in particular liberal nationalism, Marxism and Islamism. It argues that representations of Israel have reflected Egyptian conceptions of self. This book provides original and nuanced insights into the relationships between state, society and foreign policy within the context of Egyptian nationalism and broader regional politics."--

    Abstract: "The dilemma of how best to protect human rights is one of the most persistent problems facing the international community today. This unique and wide-ranging history of humanitarian intervention examines responses to oppression, persecution and mass atrocities from the emergence of the international state system and international law in the late sixteenth century, to the end of the twentieth century. Leading scholars show how opposition to tyranny and to religious persecution evolved from notions of the common interests of 'Christendom' to ultimately incorporate all people under the concept of 'human rights'. As well as examining specific episodes of intervention, the authors consider how these have been perceived and justified over time, and offer important new insights into ideas of national sovereignty, international relations and law, as well as political thought and the development of current theories of 'international community'"--

In his general, analytical introduction Constantin Iordachi focuses on transnational approaches to fascism, briefly reviewing the comparative method and its application to fascist studies. Concentrating on the interwar period, the book is divided into three parts, offering a synoptic overview of the latest developments in the field, exploring different definitions of fascism, and grounding these theoretical debates in their historical context. The three parts correspond to distinct methods and levels of comparison. "Although an antagonistic relationship between the Catholic Church and Hitler's regime developed later during the Third Reich, the early Nazi movement was born in Munich, a city whose population was overwhelmingly Catholic. Focusing on Munich and the surrounding area, Hastings shows how Catholics played a central and hitherto overlooked role in the Nazi movement before the 1923 Beerhall Putsch. He examines the striking Catholic-oriented appeals and imagery exploited by the movement and reveals how many of the early Nazi movement's leading publicists and propagandists came from the disaffected ranks of local Catholic elites, ranging from members of Catholic university fraternities to influential clergy." "As Hastings shows, the political mobilization of these early Nazi-Catholic activists succeeded largely because they were able to build upon local traditions of radical nationalism, suspicion of ultramontanism, and opposition to political Catholicism that had become increasingly pervasive in Munich before the First World War. In the aftermath of the infamous failure of the November 1923 Beerhall Putsch, however, the movement changed dramatically. Re-founded in early 1925, the Nazi party failed to regain Support in Catholic Munich. Hastings charts how the early Catholic orientation of the Nazi movement was increasingly abandoned and eventually replaced by the highly ritualized, yet distinctly anti-Christian, form of secular-political religion that characterized the Nazis after 1933."--BOOK JACKET.

Critically committed to supporting the Palestinian quest for self-determination, they present new theoretical ways of thinking about Palestine. These include the 'Palestinization' of ethnic and racial conflicts, the theorization of Palestine as camp, ghetto and prison, the tourist/activist gaze, the role of gendered resistance, the centrality of the memory of the 1948 Nakba (catastrophe) to the contemporary understanding of the conflict, and the historic roots of the contemporary discourse on Palestine. The book offers a novel examination of how the Palestinian experience of being governed under what Giorgio Agamben names a 'state of exception' may be theorized as paradigmatic for new forms of global governance.
