Abstract:
Spielberg's film both conforms to and undermines the conventions of Holocaust representation. It demonstrates the representability of the Holocaust and presents a paradigm for Holocaust films, despite the fact that its story is exceptional. Discusses the expressive tools of the film, e.g. the effects of its being monochrome. "Schindler's List" succeeds in presenting Jewish victims not as an anonymoous mass, but as individuals. The film does not contain an overt political discourse, but has an ethical charge. Reflects, also, on the role of images of children and family in the film.
