Abstract:
Surveys nationalist ideology, the influence of the Catholic Church and of the antisemitic Hlinka Party in Slovakia before the war and after March 1939, when Slovakia declared independence from Czechoslovakia. In July 1940, the fascist state headed by President Tiso and Prime Minister Tuka became a Nazi satellite. Describes measures taken against the ca. 89,000 Jews of Slovakia: racial laws (the "Jewish Codex"); Aryanization of property and businesses; and the mass deportation of 58,534 Jews between March-October 1942. Discusses the functions of the Jewish Council, led by Orthodox Jews; resistance, organized by the Zionist youth groups Hashomer Hatzair and Maccabi Hatzair; avenues of rescue; labor camps, in which ca. 3,000 Jews were interned; contacts between the Jewish and Slovak underground; the unsuccessful revolt in August 1944, and the German occupation. 3,500 Jews died during the revolt, and 12,300 were deported by the Germans. Mentions, also, aid given by the populace (9,194 Jews survived in hiding).
