Kurzfassung:
An expanded version of a paper presented at the 18th Annual Conference on Social Theory, Politics and the Arts, Philadelphia, 1992. Discusses problems related to the genre called "Holocaust television, " and compares the early representation of the Holocaust in the 1950s to later presentations. Analyzes the episode of "This Is Your Life" on Hanna Bloch Kohner, broadcast in May 1953. Born in 1919 in Czechoslovakia, she fled to Amsterdam in 1939. In 1943 she was interned first in Westerbork, and then Theresienstadt, Auschwitz, and Mauthausen. Earlier American broadcast (radio and TV) presentations centered on Jewish refugees or Displaced Persons, rather than the concentration camps and ghettos which were more popular in later decades. The Kohner episode of "This Is Your Life" did not mention the word "Holocaust"; although it spoke about persecution of the Jews, it focused on positive aspects of Kohner's life in America. Concludes that the early programs are artifacts of their moment in the history of television broadcasting, of postwar American culture, and of Holocaust culture in the making.

A revised German version appeared in "Auschwitz - Geschichte, Rezeption und Wirkung", 2. Aufl. (1997).
