Abstract:
Describes Egon Erwin Kisch's visit to Australia in 1934. Kisch, a Czech-born Jewish journalist whose initial blocked entry to Australia (he jumped from the ship, broke a leg, was arrested and released on bail) and later legal problems were probably due to his membership in the Communist Party, was not supported by the Australian Jewish community. States that the visit sparked off expressions of antisemitism in the "Bulletin" and the "Sydney Morning Herald" (e.g. allegations of harm caused by foreign Jews or local Jewish communists). Although Kisch did not seek residence in Australia, the antisemitism expressed reflects the distinction made between positively perceived Australian Jews versus foreign-born Jews seeking residence.
