Abstract:
Examines Eliade's conception of "homo religiosus" and sacredness, based on a primitive, cosmic "neopaganism", exalting mystery, violence and elitism, lacking any ethical dimension and historicity, and opposed therefore to Judaism and Western "Judaized" Christianity. Argues that, in this way, antisemitism gained a new anti-Jewish metaphysical accusation: "inventing" history, the Jews had perverted and desacralized the world. To science, modern society, humanism, and moral principles, Eliade opposed a mystical, archaic, and antisemitic system linked with fascist myths and ideology.
