Abstract:
Nazi leaders ascribed to animated films an important role in spreading anti-Jewish propaganda. The animations could be promotional, entertaining, or openly propagandistic. Nazis used them to build a negative Jewish stereotype through fear, realism, and laughter. The animations were loved by adults as well as children, and indirectly instilled anti-Jewish prejudice even in viewers who were repelled by the obvious propaganda. Contends that the process of negating the unique identity of the Jews and their humanity was exasperated by the connection between antisemitism and entertainment. Extermination of the Jews, often portrayed as commonly recognized repulsive or evil animals, could be shown without inhibition in animation; this prepared the viewers for the real thing.
