Abstract:
This article by Elchinger, the Catholic Bishop of Strasbourg, is based on a lecture delivered at the Community Center of the Synagogue of Peace in Strasbourg in 1993. Asserts that the lack of Christian appreciation of the permanent values of Judaism, the deicide accusation, and the teaching of contempt led the religious dispute to degenerate into antisemitism and persecution. Describes historical changes in the Churches after World War II, especially the declaration of Martin Niemöller and Karl Barth in 1948, recognizing the historical responsibility of the Churches in the genocide of the Jews, and the struggles in the Catholic Church which accompanied the Vatican Council II Declaration of 1965, in which the accusation of deicide was eliminated and the catechism reformed. Mentions, also, efforts of the Churches in France and in the rest of the world to improve Christian-Jewish relations.
