Abstract:
In the 16th-17th centuries many Conversos from Brazil, escaping persecution, immigrated to the Spanish colonies. Colonial officials and Church authorities in Cartagena de Indias, Mexico, Lima, and Buenos Aires monitored the lives and activities of these New Christians and in several cases took action against them through the tribunals of the Inquisition, accusing them of practicing Judaism in secret. Briefly discusses some famous cases, e.g. Juan Rodríguez Estela, Rodríguez Mesa, Luis de Carvajal, Maldonado de Silva, and the Henríquez family.
