Abstract:
Discusses the economic aspect of the anti-Jewish legislation in fascist Italy. Shows that the racial laws of November 1938 included no reference to Jewish property, and that in February 1939 the nationalization of only "excess property" (beyond a certain amount) was decreed, and this in order not to damage the Jewish contribution to the Italian economy which, the author states, was largely exaggerated by the stereotype of the "rich Jew". An institution, EGELI, was established to take charge of Jewish real estate and property, and from January 1944 the general expropriation began. Only in 1945 did the Italian administration initiate, though reluctantly, the restitution of Jewish property confiscated by the fascists.
