Abstract:
Discusses the situation in Romania after 1989: a lack of real discussion among intellectuals on Romania's past, on antisemitism in the interwar period, and on the Holocaust period. The publication of the "Journal" of the Romanian-Jewish writer Mihail Sebastian in 1996 provoked a vast amount of discussion about this book, and proved once more the incapacity of most Romanian intellectuals to cope with the past. Relates to the figure of Sebastian, an assimilated Jew, and to his "Journal". Discusses problems regarding Sebastian's friendship with Mircea Eliade, who was a fascist ideologue of the Iron Guard in the late 1930s in Romania.
