Abstract: "Yiddish, the language of Eastern-European Jews, has so far been mostly described as Germanic within the framework of the traditional, divergence-based Language Tree Model. Meanwhile, advances in contact linguistics allow for a new approach, placing the idiom within the mixed language spectrum, with the Slavic component playing a significant role. So far, the Slavic elements were studied as isolated, adstratal borrowings. This book argues that they represent a coherent system within the grammar. This suggests that it had at least as much of a constitutive role in the inception and development of Yiddish as German and Hebrew. The volume is copiously illustrated with examples from the vernacular language. With a contribution of Anna Pilarski, University of Szczecin"--

Abstract: This volume explores a core medieval myth, the tale of an Arthurian knight called Wigalois, and the ways it connects the Yiddish-speaking Jews and the German-speaking non-Jews of the Holy Roman Empire. The German Wigalois / Viduvilt adaptations grow from a multistage process: a German text adapted into Yiddish adapted into German, creating adaptations actively shaped by a minority culture within a majority culture. The Knight without Boundaries examines five key moments in the Wigalois / Viduvilt tradition that highlight transitions between narratological and meta-narratological patterns and audiences of different religious-cultural or lingual background

Abstract: In the past thirty years, the Sino-Jewish encounter in modern China has increasingly garnered scholarly and popular attention. This volume will be the first to focus on the transcultural exchange between Ashkenazic Jewry and China. The essays here investigate how this exchange of texts and translations, images and ideas, has enriched both Jewish and Chinese cultures and prepared for a global, inclusive world literature. The book breaks new ground in the field, covering such new topics as the images of China in Yiddish and German Jewish letters, the intersectionality of the Jewish and Chinese literature in illuminating the implications for a truly global and inclusive world literature, the biographies of prominent figures in Chinese-Jewish connections, the Chabad engagement in contemporary China. Some of the fundamental debates in the current scholarship will also be addressed, with a special emphasis on how many Jewish refugees arrived in Shanghai and how much interaction occurred between the Jewish refugees and the resident Chinese population during the wartime and its aftermath

Abstract: The Yiddish Theater Stage as a Temporary Home takes us through the fascinating life and career of the most important comic duo in Yiddish Theater, Shimen Dzigan and Isroel Shumacher. Spanning over the course of half a century – from the beginning of their work at the Ararat avant-garde Yiddish theater in Łodz, Poland to their Warsaw theatre – they produced bold, groundbreaking political satire. The book further discusses their wanderings through the Soviet Union during the Second World War and their attempt to revive Jewish culture in Poland after the Holocaust. It finally describes their time in Israel, first as guest performers and later as permanent residents. Despite the restrictions on Yiddish actors in Israel, the duo insisted on performing in their language and succeeded in translating the new Israeli reality into unique and timely satire. In the 1950s, they voiced a unique – among the Hebrew stages – political and cultural critique. Dzigan continued to perform on his own and with other Israeli artists until his death in 1980

Abstract: This book is the first scholarly English translation of the Ze’enah U-Re’enah, a Jewish classic originally published in the beginning of the seventeenth century, and was the first significant anthological commentary on the Torah, Haftorot and five Megillot. The Ze’enah U-Re’enah is a major text that was talked about but has not adequately studied, although it has been published in two hundred and seventy-four editions, including the Yiddish text and partial translation into several languages. Many generations of Jewish men and women have studied the Torah through the Rabbinic and medieval commentaries that the author of the Ze’enah U-Re’enah collected and translated in his work. It shaped their understanding of Jewish traditions and the lives of Biblical heroes and heroines. The Ze’enah U-Re’enah can teach us much about the influence of biblical commentaries, popular Jewish theology, folkways, and religious practices. This translation is based on the earliest editions of the Ze’enah U-Re’enah, and the notes annotate the primary sources utilized by the author.

Abstract: The book presents ten data-based studies on structural aspects of Yiddish in the light of modern linguistic theories which are of interest to linguists and philologists. The contributions address several levels of the language system including morphology, syntax and lexicology, and put special emphasis on mechanisms of internal and contact-induced language change spanning different epochs and societal and textual strata.

Abstract: Biographical note: Paul Wexler is Professor at Tel-Aviv University, Israel.
Abstract: The book claims that Yiddish was created when Judaized Sorbs first relexified their language to High German between the 9th-12th centuries; by the 15th century, the descendants of the Judaized Khazars also relexified their Kiev-Polessian (northern Ukrainian and southern Belarusian) speech to Yiddish and German, Yiddish thus uses a mixed West-East Slavic grammar and suggests that converted Khazars were a major component in the Ashkenazic ethnogenesis.

Abstract: In order to establish a model for the investigation of 'incomplete L1 acquisition' - the phenomenon whereby a bilingual speaker incompletely acquires the socially non-dominant language - the author offers a description and analysis of the speech of ten elderly speakers of Yiddish who acquired Yiddish as an L1 simultaneously with English but have not used the language since childhood. Of central interest is the question of whether the divergent forms in the data are the result of L1 attrition - the loss of knowledge once possessed - or incomplete L1 acquisition - lack of initial acquisition of the forms reflecting in the data 'fossilized' divergent child language. Bringing together certain disparate theoretical ideas, the author accepts Chomskyan notions of innateness and the language faculty while also considering the role of input in social/sociolinguistic terms. Specifically, issues such as 'linguistic identity' and patterns of use are shown to affect the quality of acquisition in bilingual situations. Through comparison with the speech of 'native' Yiddish adults, and mono- and bilingual German and Dutch children, a linguistic rule (present perfect) is isolated and shown to be due to incomplete L1 acquisition and not L1 attrition. In short, the study offers an account of what occurs when the child's innate inclination to organize linguistic input into a mature linguistic system collides with insurmountable social and sociolinguistic hindrances to 'normal' acquisition.
Abstract: This monograph establishes a theoretical model for the investigation of 'incomplete L1 acquisition' in the immigrant situation. The study focuses on the linguistic behaviour of elderly speakers who acquired Yiddish simultaneously with English and have not used the language since childhood. The central question is whether ungrammatical forms in the data can be traced to the attrition of forms once acquired or to the incomplete acquisition of those forms. With regard to Yiddish present perfect rules, results favor the latter explanation, indicating long-fossilized, divergent child language

Abstract: Biographical Dictionary of Yiddish Writers Welcome to this new blog. I hope those of you willing and able will join me in this adventure, because this is something that one simply cannot do alone. My plan is to start posting online translations from the eight-volume Leksikon fun der nayer yidisher literatur (Biographical dictionary of modern Yiddish literature), published by the Congress for Jewish Culture a half century ago. These translations are neither meant to replace the originals, nor are they authorized, but they are offered as tools for those interested in the many topics they raise. The eight volumes of this work fill roughly 4,800 columns and thousands of individual author entries—many very famous and subjects of studies in their own right, but many others of much less well known writers, poets, journalists, teachers, and translators. Where information is available, I have added snippets here and there—such as inserting a date or correcting a typo. I have not, however, attempted to write fuller biographies of all the entries—that would require another lifetime. I have started right at “alef” and will post a handful every time that I am able to do so. Readers interested in participating or correcting should contact me through the comments section of this blog. I can then serve as a clearing house for translations. Again, the aim is to make this wonderful source available to more readers. Where visual material is available, I will add it to the blog posts. I have as a rule translated all titles, including journal and newspaper titles (except in the source notes), and on occasion added a piece of bibliographical information not in the original Leksikon.
