Abstract:
Discusses the rash of Yiddish dramatizations of the Beilis case staged in New York and other cities in the U.S. in 1913, some even before Beilis was exonerated of the charge of blood libel by the Russian court in November 1913. The dramatizations were "tsaytbilder, " or pictures of the times; however, they lacked historical perspective. Critics and some viewers believed that famous Yiddish actors and others were exploiting a current Jewish event for financial purposes. Draws several conclusions regarding the Yiddish theater and Yiddish audiences at that time.
