Abstract:
During the reign of Juan I in Castile (1379-90), a time characterized by deep economic crisis, Castilian legislation restricted many of the privileges accorded to the Jews since the 11th century. This was a result of the attempt of the king to appease the growing hatred of the populace and of the lower clergy toward the Jews, and his desire to maintain the Jews as a source of tax payments to the Crown. The restrictions involved relations between Jews and Christians, the holding of state positions by Jews, loans, etc. Juan I instituted the position of Chief Rabbi of the Court, i.e. a rabbi appointed to deal with Jewish affairs or internecine conflicts. These changes worked to contain the anti-Jewish tendencies so long as Juan was alive; in 1391, the situation deteriorated with an outbreak of riots and mass forced conversion of Jews.
