Abstract:
Anti-Jewish riots in Spain in the late 14th-15th centuries brought about the first group of the Converso population in the Iberian peninsula. The second group was brought about by the expulsion decrees in Spain and Portugal in the late 15th century. The Conversos and their descendants then became an ostracized group in a Spain and a Portugal devoided of their Jewish population. Iberian society refused to see that, beside the crypto-Jews, there were Conversos who professed Christianity sincerely, and persecuted all of them. During the first 50 years of its activities, the Spanish Inquisition focused primarily on crypto-Jews; even in 1539-1700, Conversos constituted ca. 10% of its victims.
