Abstract:
Traces the textual history and derivation of three interrelated tractates, whose popularity is attested by the great number of extant manuscripts and incunabula: the first and second apparently from the 13th century, the third from the 14th. They are handbooks for dispute with Jews, and contain quotations from the Talmud and their refutation. The main allegations are the irrationality of the Talmud (many of the examples are taken from the Aggadah) and the hatred it expresses toward gentiles. Notes that the tone of the printed version of the later text is more abusive than that of the earlier texts or the manuscript versions of the same text, reflecting the worsening social situation of the Jews. These tractates were read by the lower clergy and formed a basis for their sermons.
