Abstract:
Describes ghettos in the area of western Russia (today, regions of Pskov, Smolensk, Tver, Bryansk, and the city Kaluga). Notes their specific character; e.g. these ghettos were mainly short-lived (1-7 months, with only two cases of 10-11 months); Jewish councils did not play a significant role in them; the conditions in the ghettos were utterly primitive and unbearable, even in comparison with the Polish ghettos (extreme crowding, lack of food, etc.), leading to high mortality; the first victims of the mass murders were young, strong men and women who could have put up a resistance. Describes the forced labor in the ghettos, confiscations of Jewish property, forms of abuse of the ghetto population, and attempts at resistance. Based mainly on eyewitness accounts.
