Abstract:
A paper presented at an international congress on the socio-historical interpretaton of the New Testament, Medina del Campo, May 1991. Analyzes bishop Julián of Toledo's "De comprobatione sextae aetatis, libri tres" (686), an anti-Jewish polemical text written at the behest of the Visigoth King of Spain, Ervigius. Julián accused the Jews not only of rejecting Jesus as the Messiah, but also of spreading word of a later coming of the real Messiah during the sixth millennium, thus shaking many Christians' faith.
