Abstract:
Discusses the activities of Emanuel Ringelblum and his collaborators in the framework of "Oneg Shabbat", the documentation center he founded in the Warsaw ghetto in 1940. Besides collecting individual testimonies illustrating the fate of the Jewish population in occupied Poland, the printing of news bulletins was one of the main activities. Describes the methods of collecting information about events occurring outside the ghetto under conditions of complete isolation. Examines how information was received on the massacres of the Jews in eastern Poland and on the extermination camps Chełmno, Bełżec, Sobibór, and Treblinka, through contacts with the Vilna Jewish underground, among others. Emphasizes the importance of these archives for studying the history of the Holocaust, and for understanding the dimensions of the extermination. Describes, also, the participation of Ringelblum's group in preparations for the armed resistance.
