Abstract:
Discusses an Inquisitorial trial in Modena, Italy, in the context of the Counter-Reformation's anti-Jewish campaign centered on complete segregation of the Jews and censorship of their books in order to pressure them to convert. During the Modena trial of 1634, two Conversos, Francesco Maria De Giacinti and Carlo Francesco Oliari, were accused of reverting to Judaism and were sentenced to light prison terms for the weakness of ceding to "seduction". On the other hand, De Giacinti's father, Giuseppe Finzi, who remained a Jew, was sentenced to a long prison term for the guilt of seducing and corrupting the two - that is, for proselytizing for Judaism. Includes correspondence between the defendants.
