Abstract:
Efforts made by Israeli diplomats to establish relations with Malaysia in the 1950s-60s were unsuccessful, despite the good will of Malayan leader Abdul Rahman, due to pressure from Islamic countries hostile to Israel. The situation worsened in 1965, and deteriorated seriously in 1981, when Mahathir bin Mohamad became prime minister. Mahathir is a radical Muslim who is anti-Israel and antisemitic; he and other Malaysian diplomats have made many antisemitic statements. There are no Jews in Malaysia, but world Jewry has been blamed for the country's ills. Mahathir did not permit Jews to enter the country until 1994, when Malaysians were also allowed to travel to Israel, and in 1996 trade relations were established between the two countries. However, Mahathir remains strongly antisemitic; in 1997 he claimed that the country's economic crisis was caused by a "Jewish world conspiracy".
