Abstract:
Many reports of physical attacks on Jews by Islamic youth, especially in France, and of hostility toward Israel and Jews among leftists in the anti-globalization, anti-American movement, raise the question whether the Middle East conflict has spread to Europe. Notes that leftist slogans, as well as articles and cartoons in leftist and even in liberal publications that, for instance, compare the Israeli army to the SS, are not as common as it may seem and are controversial even on the Left; they arise from sympathy for the Palestinians as the underdog. Describes the social background of Islamic youths: though born in Europe and detached from their parents' countries of origin, they are not integrated in the society around them, and find their identity in Islam. Themselves discriminated against, they see the Palestinians as symbols of the West's oppression of Muslims and of heroic Muslim resistance. However, points out that many Muslim youths are well integrated and successful and take no part in violence. also describes the sociology of the Jewish communities in Europe, and their reactions to antisemitism and allegations of dual loyalty.
