Abstract:
Relates the story of the Italian merchant Giorgio Perlasca, who, while living in 1944 in Budapest, saved the lives of more than 5,000 Jews. As a former combatant in the Spanish Civil War he had connections in the Spanish embassy, and as an Italian citizen in German-occupied Hungary, in danger himself after the landing of the Allies in Italy, he managed to get a Spanish passport and to be employed by the ambassador, Sanz Briz. Spain had "houses of protection" which afforded refuge to Jews. When Sanz Briz left Budapest on 29 November 1944 and fled to Switzerland, the Hungarian authorities declared that all Hungarian-Spanish relations were cancelled, and protected Jews were to be deported. Perlasca declared himself the representative of the ambassador and managed to prevent the deportation.
