Kurzfassung:
Based on a lecture held in Vienna in 1994. Discusses various aspects of Schnitzler's story of 1905 about the sinister self-fulfilling prophecies and other tricks perpetrated by a Galician Jewish fortuneteller and hypnotist on a company of soldiers who have humiliated him in his only partially successful attempts to discard the stigmas of his Jewishness. In an essay of 1919 Freud expressed his dislike of this story; one of his reasons may have been the figure of the fortuneteller, a vulgar version of the heroic avenger of the Jews of whom Freud dreamed in the form of Hannibal. Points to the antisemitism of Lueger's Vienna as the background for Schnitzler's treatment of the theme.
