Abstract:
Discusses two works in the world of the arts - the passion play and an altarpiece by Hans Holbein on the life of Christ - which were used ca. 1500 to provoke Jew-hatred in Frankfurt. The anti-Jewish climate had a significant influence on the success of Johannes Pfefferkorn (1470-1522) in obtaining the consent of the Emperor Maximilian I and local authorities to his initiative for a missionary campaign among the Jews.
