Abstract:
Discusses a recent attempt of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra to include works by Richard Wagner in its repertoire, and the heated opposition it aroused due to Wagner's antisemitism and to the belief that his music became a symbol of the Nazi regime. Objects to the latter contention, stating that the subject of symbols and the avoidance of objectionable symbols is problematic and can lead to absurd situations. Presents the arguments for and against, and concludes that Wagner's works should not be played at subscription concerts, but should be available to Israeli audiences at special concerts.
