Abstract:
Argues that true dialogue between Christians and Jews, where both sides are open and attentive to each other, never existed; from the beginning, what was called a dialogue was actually an assertion of Christian power. Discusses examples of triumphalism in imaginary disputations, in the representation of Synagoga in German morality plays, and in a Carnival (Fastnacht) farce by Hans Folz (1435/40-1513). In this play, two rabbis talk about the Jews' evil designs on Christians and boast about how the Christians have been subjected to them through the power of their purse.
