Kurzfassung:
The anti-Jewish policies of the Vichy regime, which began with the enactment of the Statut des Juifs in October 1940, was aimed at removing any political, military, artistic, or intellectual influence of the Jews on French society. In contrast, the aim of the Nazi occupation authorities at that time was focused primarily on eliminating the Jews from economic life, because the Nazis prioritized, above all other considerations, the economic adaptation of France to the German war effort. Therefore, the anti-Jewish policy of Vichy was independent from Nazi dictates. It was a crystallization of the development of French antisemitism resulting from the crisis of the Third Republic (1870-1940), from the ascension to power of Léon Blum in 1936, and from the massive immigration of Jews from Germany and from Eastern Europe. The Jews were seen as responsible for the political and economic chaos in which the country was mired, for having precipitated France into the war against Germany, and for France's defeat in 1940.
