Abstract:
Summarizes a study in progress, to be published in 2000. (It was published as "Auschwitz, nie davon gehört?" - ed.) Polls show widespread ignorance among teenagers in both parts of Germany about the Holocaust. Almost 22%, for example, did not know what Auschwitz was. Ignorance among adults was less, but still worrisome because of their many opportunities over the years to learn about the Holocaust. The foremost source of knowledge was the media, secondly the schools, and only in the last place were the parents. 73% of the subjects thought it important to remember the Holocaust in order to prevent its recurrence, or out of respect for the victims. 26% were opposed; they felt memory of the Holocaust burdened the Germans with constant blame for the actions of a former generation. Recommends an emphasis on knowledge in the teaching of the Holocaust; the attempt to induce horror and guilt only leads to defensiveness and suppression.
