Abstract:
Discusses how Sigmund Freud used the poetry of Heinrich Heine as a vehicle to develop his own thinking about sexual identity. Examines prevalent thought at the time, which stigmatized the Jew as biologically inferior. Discusses, for example, circumcision which allegedly left the Jew only part male and separate from the rest of humanity. Demonstrates how Freud and Heine incorporated this thinking into their own development as Jewish anti-Jews.
