Abstract:
The legend of the ritual murder of the three-year-old Anderl von Rinn was invented by Hippolytus Guarinonius (1571-1654) of Hall in the Tyrol; he wrote it down in 1620, though he published it only in 1651. Probably at his suggestion, the pupils of the Jesuit school of Hall presented the story in 1621 in a play before a large audience, and thus started the cult of Anderl, which lasted into the 1990s. States that Jesuit plays were very powerful instruments of propaganda for the Counterreformation; they dealt with a variety of topics, and a a few of them with ritual murder. Of the Anderl play, only the perioche (introduction and outline) has survived; it is reprinted on pp. 633-640.
