Abstract:
Analyzes, on the basis of an enquiry among 564 Israeli students (women in the majority, 21-26 years of age, 64% secular and traditional, and 36% religious), present trends in the definition of Jewish-Israeli identity. States that the generation born after the 1967 and 1973 wars feels less "Israeli first" and more Jewish than the generation before. More interesting, this generation singularizes the Holocaust as the main event marking the destiny of the Jewish people and influencing its own personal destiny. The young Israelis (secular and religious alike) identify with the victims and the survivors of the Holocaust, which became a major component of their Jewish identity, in either ethnic, religious, or Zionist terms.
