Abstract:
Discusses the ability of images to reflect the the Holocaust correctly in light of an exhibition held in Paris in 2015. The exhibition presents works of Soviet filmmakers who filmed Nazi atrocities on Soviet territory as well as atrocities discovered by the Red Army during liberation of the death camps. Argues that the exhibition serves pedagogical as well as critical purposes, showing that some images were composed and edited to boost Soviet propaganda. Some of the scenes, for instance of the liberation of Auschwitz, were later reconstructions, since the Soviets who entered the camp were wholly unprepared for what awaited them. Concludes that the exhibition is correct in thematizing memory as being based on construction. No event is unequivocal, and therefore no memory is exact.
