Abstract:
Discusses Heine's perceptions of hatred of the Jews as expressed in various books of the Old Testament and references to these in his poetry and thought, with a view also to the antisemitism in his day. Emphasizes Heine's path to modern secular Judaism, aware of history and critical of God. In 1838 he warned against waves of persecution emanating from demonic forces of old German pantheism, which will be worse for the Jewish people than all previous afflictions.
