Abstract:
With the establishment of Islam and during its early expansion in the 7th century, the relationship of the emerging Muslim states to religious minorities (including Jews) was regulated by the "dhimma", a contract imposed by the conquerors on the conquered, establishing rights, obligations, and restrictions. Asserts that the Jews were the first to be subjugated in the Arabian peninsula; they lost their land and independence, becoming tenants of the state. The situation worsened under the rule of the first caliphs. Explains that the "dhimma" evolved from the idea of "umma", the religious ethnic community which was rooted in pre-Islamic religions, known as "Hanifism". Muhammad united many Arab tribes under this idea, segregating "ummas" other than Muslims.
