Abstract:
Analyzes writings by German philosophers relating to the "Jewish question" in the period of the Jewish Enlightenment (Haskalah) in Germany. Quotes from works by Kant, Hegel, Lessing, Fichte, Feuerbach, and others, noting their total misunderstanding of Judaism. Kant described Judaism as a simple superstition, and Feuerbach asserted that Judaism is egoism in the form of religion. States that in the Haskalah period there was no dialogue between Jewish and German intellectuals, and that not one of the Germans showed an interest in the attempts to reform Judaism. Concludes that German philosophers rejected the idea of the integration of the Jews in modern society, and that German philosophy on the Jews formed a bridge between traditional Christian anti-Judaism and modern antisemitism.
