Abstract:
Discusses networks of relationships and communications between Christian and Jewish individuals and organizations which were active in opposing Nazi anti-Jewish policies. Several joint networks and Christian ecumenical organizations, both in Europe and the USA, such as the Federal Council of Churches and the National Conference of Christians and Jews, organized fact-finding trips to Germany to obtain a first-hand impression of the rise in antisemitic violence there. They collected information on the Nazi policies; tried to help refugees, including Jewish refugees from Germany; and publicly condemned Nazi antisemitism. Focuses on a number of Jewish and Christian individuals and describes their activities. Although there were strong divisions within and between the organizations about numerous issues, there was far more interreligious cooperation and communication than is commonly assumed in the literature. These same networks and leaders became the foundation for later postwar efforts of Christians and Jews to work together.
