Abstract:
Based on testimonies of 30 Holocaust survivors from Khust, Ukraine, describes life in the town before and during the Holocaust. In 1930 there were ca. 5,000 Jews in Khust. The area was occupied by Hungary in March 1939, and many Jewish businesses were taken over by non-Jews, impoverishing the Jewish community. There were physical attacks on Jews, in which the Hungarian gendarmerie also took part, and many Jews were inducted into Hungarian military labor service units. In July-August 1941, ca. 600 Jews who did not have Hungarian citizenship were expelled to Galicia. After the Nazi occupation in March 1944, deportations began, carried out mostly by the Hungarian gendarmerie. Describes the anti-Jewish laws, the brief period of ghettoization, and the role of the Judenrat. The last deportations took place in June 1944; most of the Jews perished in Auschwitz. Notes that there had not been a tradition of antisemitism in Ruthenia. However, antisemitism began under Czech rule, because the Jews were not in favor of Ruthenian independence, and it increased under Hungarian rule, when the Ruthenians participated in the persecution of Jews.
