Abstract:
Discusses four works of postwar French fiction: Patrick Modiano's "La Place de l'Étoile" (1968) and "Dora Bruder" (1997), Claude Simon's "L'Acacia" (1989), and J.M.G. Le Clézio's "Étoile errante" (1992). Focuses on the use of the symbol of the star to contrast two aspects of historical memory, as represented by the Place de l'Étoile in Paris, with the national emblem of the Arc de Triomphe at its center, and the Jewish star, with its dual resonance as an emblem of Jewish continuity and of Jewish fate under the Nazis. Modiano's "Dora Bruder" recounts the search for a Jewish woman who disappeared during the Holocaust. Her absence represents the deaths of those Jews whom French society did not protect during World War II, and recalls the antisemitism in French society that led to collaboration with the Nazis.
Note:
On France's relationship to its Jewish community during the Holocaust through three novels.
