Abstract:
Before World War II, the region of Opole in Upper Silesia was part of Germany and had the status of a regency (Regenzbezirk), with the capital in Opole. There were ca. 9,500 Jews living in 23 communities in the region. When the Geneva Convention expired in 1937, the region came under the jurisdiction of the anti-Jewish German legislation. During the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, 9-10 November 1938, SA militants looted numerous Jewish homes, shops, and businesses. All 23 synagogues were burnt down. During the war, all of the Jews were deported, chiefly to Theresienstadt and from there to Auschwitz, where most of them perished.
