Abstract: When Nazi Germany occupied Poland in 1939, the Turek district was incorporated into the Reichsgau Wartheland. Based on eyewitnesses' testimonies, reconstructs the conditions prevailing in the Czachulec ghetto, one of three rural ghettos established south of the town of Turek following the liquidation of the Turek ghetto. The ghetto in the village of Czachulec existed from 20 October 1941 to 20 July 1942, and housed some 3,500 Jews from the area; most of them were murdered in the nearby Chełmno extermination camp. Describes varying attitudes of Polish farmers in the area toward the Jews and their plight - from altruistic acts to exploiting the Jews for profit to regular denunciations.
