Abstract:
Studying and writing the history of a minority group such as the Jews is as complex as it is fruitful for analyzing the more general history of Ancient Regime societies. Indeed, this perspective makes it possible to question from another angle a certain number of broader social phenomena, which encompass political and cultural history as well as the history of law and institutions, or the economic and social history of past but also of contemporary societies, insofar as the history of the Jews has constituted, in many ways, a laboratory, both in history and in the social sciences, for thinking about a range of categories or concepts. These notions, sometimes used intuitively or unconsciously by researchers, are presented and comprehended here through a particular field of research, that is to say modern Italy, which has been a receptacle for Jewish populations, solidly anchored and integrated into the territory and cities of the peninsula, but also discriminated from a legal, social or economic point of view.
